You've carefully chosen the perfect stair parts, paid for custom cuts and built everything to code. Now, you need to occasionally maintain your new wood staircase to allow it to mature properly.

Staircase maintenance isn't particularly difficult, but keeping hardwoods looking great will take some diligence and regular attention. There are a few things you should be aware of to keep your staircase in good condition. Here are tips to help you develop a maintenance plan for your new staircase to keep it looking like new.

1. Know Your Wood. Depending on the wood you use in your staircase, you may need to forbid family members from wearing footwear when going up or down the stairs. Know your wood's hardness in comparison to other woods. For instance, if you have a walnut staircase, you probably need to set up a few household rules, but if you've got a hard wood like oak with a high-quality finish, you probably don't need to worry as much.

You should also know whether your wood is natural or engineered and how it was finished. If you buy your stair parts from a reputable supplier, you should have easy access to all of this information.

2. Clean your stairs at least once per week. Vacuum or sweep to get small particles off of the wood, then use a cleaner designed specifically for the wood type you have. Don't ever use abrasive cleaners designed for tile floors on quality hardwoods. Your stair supplier should be able to recommend a reliable product that will help protect and clean your stairs properly.

3. Use rugs to keep your stairs safe from wear and damage. Put a rug at the top and bottom of your staircase to prevent dust, pebbles and other particles from scratching your wood. If family members frequently wear footwear in your home, use rugs with thin bristles.

Finally, it is important to know when to refinish your stairs. If your wood is starting to show signs of wear, you'll need to rent an oscillating tool to remove the old finish and apply a new finish as quickly as possible.

If you're uncomfortable with performing this process yourself, call a professional service to do the job. You've probably paid a lot of money for your wood stairs, and spending a few extra dollars for a proper refinishing will protect your investment and keep your stairs looking great for years to come.

Since centuries, timber is accepted as universal material for stairs. However, the concept we have today has been totally remodeled. Unlike early days, you can see different materials used in staircase design, like glass, steel, aluminium, stones tiles, etc. But the charm that lies in timber cannot be matched by any other material. While, timber offers unparallel beauty, it can be an odd piece in the house if not chosen appropriately. Here are few things about timber step that you should know before you make your choice for design:

Different timber different jobs

Timber species greatly differ in their characteristics. One wood type that is suitable for kitchen furniture may not be appropriate for living room furniture. Say, Brush Box is suitable for treads and risers, but is inappropriate for strings, balusters and newels. Timber types may not cost you too high if you go for quality, unless you opt for something exclusively exotic. If possible you can check out the wood samples at staircase design stores that are commercially used for this purpose.

Match the timber type

Before making your choice why not look at the type of wood used in your furniture? You can harmonize or match rest of the wooden item with stairs in terms of their pattern and design. They naturally differ in grain patterns and color that are easier to match by carpenters.

Learn parts and terms of stairs

By learning parts and terms you will be able to describe your requirements and will also help you understand about what you are ordering. Often people don't order to make entire stair but ask for parts. Unless you know about the related terms how will you explain salesman what do you want? Also without knowledge you will be unable to negotiate the quotation marked by different vendors.

Finishing your staircase design

Wooden creations cannot mark their presence until they are polished. Usually, finishing of any wood is done in many different ways, such as French polishing, staining, painting and carpeting. However, not all finishing methods are meant for all timbers, which can significantly affect your choice of wood. It is important to finish the newly installed wood as unfinished woods are more likely to scratch. Therefore, avoid walking on the wooden steps until they are polished. Also, don't forget to seal them within a week of its completion.

Keeping these things in mind, it is easier to make a choice for staircase design and make them last longer. Get more and more knowledge before you contact a stair builder so that you achieve exactly what you are looking for.

A simple way to add functionality and style to any room in your home is with a rolling ladder. The purpose of a rolling ladder is to access those hard-to-reach places with ease. An added bonus is that the ladders provide a classy look to your home and can become the main attraction of your room.

There are so many uses for rolling ladders, so there's no need to doubt that they will work in your home. One of the most popular uses is for a library ladder. Not only will this help you reach books on the highest shelves, but it also offers an expensive and elegant look. Even though a library is usually the first place that pops in your mind, there are other common uses for these rolling ladders. These include using one in your wine cellar to reach your finest vino, in a bathroom to reach guest's towels and toiletries, in a closet to access stored clothing or even in a kitchen or pantry to reach for canned goods or pots and pans.

They allow you to reach all those items that you have stored higher up in order to optimize your storage space- something that is crucial to most homeowners. Imagine the storage you could have if you used the space clear to the ceilings.

One of the many features of these rolling library ladders is their ability to be customized. When selecting a ladder, you get to choose from your favorite type of wood, shade of finish, type of upper guides and style of ladder wheels. You also choose the height and number of rungs for a perfect fit to your home. These options allow you to find the ladder that matches perfectly with your home's style and décor. Popular finishes for the hardware include antique brass, bronze and satin nickel, while popular wood choices include oak, maple and cherry.

It's important to make sure your ladder is properly installed for the safety of you and your family. It's best to have a professional install the ladder to prevent any accidents from happening. Make sure everything is properly measured and that the space of the room is taken into account when ordering your ladder. After all of this, just customize the aesthetic to your liking and you have a new addition to your home.

Library ladders look great, add interest and function, and allow you to reach new heights.

When ever you plan to do some work in your in order to make it more beautified of in order to induce some improvements in it so the thing you need the most is the availability of a good ladder that can make your work easy and best possible. But do you know that ladders come in different shapes sizes depending upon the materials used in it and in this regard the best examples to be mentioned here will be Aluminium Ladders, Loft Ladders, Trade ladders etc. Despite many different types of differences that occur in ladders there are some steps that must be considered by an individual before buying a ladders for his personal or industrial use. This is the big contradiction in most of the people's minds that any ladder can be used anywhere but it is not the case every ladder is specialized for particular tasks depending upon their length, weight toleration level and material used in it.

On usual basis most of the people are in the need of a ladder in order to finish their tasks in an efficient manner and with great ease as well. It is not the home job that is performed by these ladders but for some of the individuals it is considered as the must part of their job as without them their jobs cannot be performed. There isn't any doubt in its importance and the help that is provided by them but one cannot deny that ladders can also termed as dangerous if they are not properly utilized. That is the reason the most of the ladders manufacturers are liable to pass certain tests which can prove their ladders safe for use before getting their permit of sales.

As discussed above that ladders are not only categorized on the basis of shapes and sizes but there categorization is also done on the basis of the material used in them but one cannot deny this fact that it makes the work really easy for the users. There usage can be differed in accordance with work type and situations for example ladders can be used for home works but these are the ladders that are used by the fire brigades in their trucks. As the length of ladders vary and some ladders are extremely extended or long in order to perform different activities of high heights so the fulfillment they are required to pass certain quality tests such as American National standard Institute etc in order to make sure that these ladders are extremely safe and best to be used for carrying out different work ups.

Without passing such standard tests that are done for their quality testing these ladders cannot be considered as safe to use. These evaluation tests are done in aim to provide maximum safety to the users because if they don't pass the quality tests so they can result into the deaths and injuries of many workers.

This is the big contradiction in most of the people’s minds that any ladder can be used anywhere but it is not the case every ladder is specialized for particular tasks depending upon their length, weight toleration level and material used in it.

On usual basis most of the people are in the need of a ladder in order to finish their tasks in an efficient manner and with great ease as well. It is not the home job that is performed by these ladders but for some of the individuals it is considered as the must part of their job as without them their jobs cannot be performed.
A spiral staircase can be the focal point of any room and can serve a practical purpose. Their designs have made it easy to select a particular style. Whenever you plan to build a new house or if you are planning to remodel your house, always consider designing them. This will give an appealing touch to your living room or dining room. They are considered an architectural work of art. They are steep and compact and they serve a purpose to be used as a stairway in a home or office that does not have space to devote to a large, full size staircase.

Benefits-

They not only add the value to your house but also represent a unique form of expert craftsmanship which makes your house very attractive. There are wide range of designs available these days, you can easily select according to your choice and home requirement.
Apart from their attractive designs, their beautiful architecture, spiral staircases are popular choices for home remodeling projects since they don't require too much extra space. They are great for houses where you need a way to go from the first to the second level in a limited space.
They are aesthetically pleasing and often evoke a sense of nostalgia. Spiral staircase designs have been used in buildings and churches for centuries, creating a seemingly impossible masterpiece of construction.

Reason for choosing a spiral staircase-

The prime reason of choosing a spiral staircase for your home is their attractive looks and also the fact that they requires far less space than a traditional staircase. They are compact, which means that they can be placed in a corner of a room if space is limited. They are also frequently used for fire escapes on the exterior of apartment buildings.
They can be made safer while designing by limiting the amount of space between each stair, the backless design of the staircase becomes safer. For example, if the stairs are shallow, with only a few inches of space between each one, it becomes much more difficult for a person to slip and they may become injured by falling through the space. In case of a two-story home with limited floor space, a spiral staircase is attached to an opening in the top floor.
In comparison to a traditional flight of stairs which requires room to descend gradually, is simply compacted into a vertical spiral.

The Necessity for Staircase Hand Rails

Staircase hand rails serve a very important function as they provide support for those that walk up staircases. But they serve the ultimate purpose for the mobility challenged people like the elderly and those with knee problems causing walking and climbing difficulties.

Grab rails are not just a safety feature in staircases today. It has become a definite necessity not only in commercial and public areas but also in our own private homes as well.

Why Stainless Steel is the Preferred Material for Hand Rails

Gone are the days when business establishments and home owners use the traditional carbon steel, aluminum, and cast iron hand rails for staircases. They might be cheaper than steel, which is fast gaining popularity in the world of staircase hand rails but truth is they deteriorate faster. With faster deterioration and short service life, it actually costs people more.

Experts have figured out that stainless steel is the perfect material to be used for the rails. This is because they are extremely durable and low maintenance. They look good and would not interfere with the good appearance of your place. In addition to all those, they are also very hygienic.

Stainless steel hand railings have non-porous properties. This technically means they would not do not in any way be able to harbor any bacteria and germs making it perfect both for private and public establishments. They are also non-corrosive that makes it definitely last longer than any other material today. They are what you would call low-maintenance railings. They are very easy to clean and do not need any harsh chemicals that might affect a person's good health or the environment.

The True Durability of Stainless Steel Hand Rails

Generally speaking, steel rails are very durable. In fact, every single thing made from stainless steel is extremely durable and can last for a very long time. However, just like any other material, there will be factors that would have to be considered for durability.

Durability of stainless steel rails alone without any other factor is at its highest form. However, things like steel grade, surface finish, and environment can take its toll on the durability of the rails.

With over 60 grades of stainless steel, engineers usually determine which one would best suit your needs before constructing staircase hand rails especially in an outside setting. While home owners seem to have much less of a problem regarding durability of their stainless steel grab rails since their only factor would be the usual wear and tear caused by environment or care given.

Proper care usually consists of the very basic and mildest cleaning method. It is very easy to clean but do remember to stay away from abrasives and steel wool and you should have no problem with the expected durability of your stainless steel hand rails.

You may be wondering what surprise Santa can bring the kids this year. This may be the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the joys of pet ownership. For many young children a hamster, rat or mouse makes an ideal first pet. They are easy to care for, can be kept indoors in the child's bedroom, and they make a wonderful introduction to pet ownership, giving children lots of joy while teaching them about the responsibility of caring for their very own pet. There are some wonderful small pet cages and starter kits available, ranging from small start-up packages to deluxe critter mansions. Some of these can be expanded by adding more components to connect up to another cage in the line, allowing complete flexibility to do some home improvements on your pet palace as your budget allows. My favourite cages for hamsters and mice belong to the Critter Trail line. These are colourful, funky cages, made from anti-microbial moulded plastic, that come in a wide range of zooty designs. They come fitted with fun accessories, and extra items can be purchased to add to the cage at will. Lets take a look at some of the options in this range.

Critter Trail Dazzle

The Critter Trail Dazzle is for the discerning glitterati critter, and is a fantastic choice for young girls. This dazzling purple glitter cage offers bling-bling for your critter. The cage itself is well ventilated, with a deep bottom tray to hold pet litter and prevent spillage. The main feature is the removable orbiting wheel, which sparkles as it turns - a real eye-catcher indeed. The cage comes fitted with plastic climbing tubes, and a tunnel leading up to a petting zone. While this is a really snazzy cage, the downside is that it is not that practical when it comes to cleaning - but beauty comes with a price and there are some who may find this a small irritation considering its stylish good looks.

Critter Trail X

The Critter Trail X offers a fun-filled activity centre for your critter. The striking combination of purple moulded plastic together with lime green accessories makes this a funky cage suitable for both boys and girls - and their critters of course. It has a spiral staircase/slide leading to an exterior glow-in-the-dark exercise wheel, which moves on its axis as it rotates - very cool. Another feature of this cage is the extractable petting zone, which also comes in handy to contain your hamster when you are cleaning his cage. The wheel can be a bit noisy if the hamster takes his food or bedding into it, making it rattle and hum, but this is a common problem with closed wheel accessories, and it can be easily fixed by taking it apart for a good clean out.

Critter Trail Z

Z for zooty, Z for zoom, the Critter Trail Z offers both style and a fast paced lifestyle for your critter. It comes in stylish contrasting shades of blue, purple and green and offers some nifty features. The most striking feature is the removable glow-in-the-dark exercise ball, accessed by funnels, providing your critter with ample work out opportunities - it can even be removed for him to run around safely on the floor!

The cage is also fitted with a petting zone, where your little furry friend can catch some zzzz's after all that exercise. All Critter Trail cages come fitted with a water bottle and a colour coordinated food bowl. There are many accessories that can be purchased as add-ons to expand your critters abode, you can even join two or more critter trail habitats together to form a humongous hamster house! As hamster cages go, the Critter Trail habitats are rather on the pricy side, but will be worth the outlay when you see the delight on your child's face, so start saving now, and place your order with Santa soon.

Homemade Spiral Staircase

You may be wondering what surprise Santa can bring the kids this year. This may be the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the joys of pet ownership. For many young children a hamster, rat or mouse makes an ideal first pet. They are easy to care for, can be kept indoors in the child’s bedroom, and they make a wonderful introduction to pet ownership, giving children lots of joy while teaching them about the responsibility of caring for their very own pet.

The main feature is the removable orbiting wheel, which sparkles as it turns – a real eye-catcher indeed. The cage comes fitted with plastic climbing tubes, and a tunnel leading up to a petting zone. While this is a really snazzy cage, the downside is that it is not that practical when it comes to cleaning – but beauty comes with a price and there are some who may find this a small irritation considering its stylish good looks.

Critter Trail X

The Critter Trail X offers a fun-filled activity centre for your critter. The striking combination of purple moulded plastic together with lime green accessories makes this a funky cage suitable for both boys and girls – and their critters of course. It has a spiral staircase/slide leading to an exterior glow-in-the-dark exercise wheel, which moves on its axis as it rotates – very cool.

The most striking feature is the removable glow-in-the-dark exercise ball, accessed by funnels, providing your critter with ample work out opportunities – it can even be removed for him to run around safely on the floor!

The cage is also fitted with a petting zone, where your little furry friend can catch some zzzz’s after all that exercise. All Critter Trail cages come fitted with a water bottle and a colour coordinated food bowl. There are many accessories that can be purchased as add-ons to expand your critters abode, you can even join two or more critter trail habitats together to form a humongous hamster house! As hamster cages go, the Critter Trail habitats are rather on the pricy side, but will be worth the outlay when you see the delight on your child’s face, so start saving now, and place your order with Santa soon.

Winding staircases are usually constructed where the space is constricted. This is when a straight flight with a normal landing is not possible. The house design will have the upper floor with a normal height as for a straight flight stair. It is important that the head room is maintained. This will prevent hitting the upper floor slab with the head when walking up or down the stair well. The finishing over the concrete can be done with many products.

Winding concrete stair cases can be made to be economical on reinforcements and other materials. This does not need to have a full sized tread of minimum three feet. The tread width can be one and a half wide and having a normal riser height. This height is usually minimum six inches high. The winding can be through three hundred and sixty degrees or less. This will depend on the point of landing. The number of treads is eighteen including the landing.

The construction of a winding concrete stair commences by measuring the floor to floor headroom. The height of nine feet headroom will give eighteen risers of six inches each. Starter bars are first cast onto the ground floor slab. The intended width is one and a half feet. The form work is then made to the top of the upper floor. IT is curved round up to the next floor. The height of each riser is marked onto the form sides. The reinforcements are then tied and joined with the exposed upper floor steel.

After the steel is in place, the riser form work is then fixed as marked while winding. This is repeated and adjustments done until all treads are equal to the top. Concrete is cast and vibrated. After fourteen days the form work is removed. Timber treads of two feet wide are screwed onto the concrete. This give a stair width of two feet. Once the treads and risers are fixed, varnish is applied. Winding handrails are fixed on both sides to the top for safety.

Last year about this time I was in the market for a new treestand and Big Game Ladder Stands were in the front running due to their reputation. I knew this stand would remain in place for a very long time because of the location and our long term permission to hunt this property. So weight wasn't a big factor, but comfort was. I wanted a tree stand that was comfortable and easy to turn around in. Since I'm a pretty big ole boy, those were some tough shoes to fill!

Finally, after running around town looking at several different models and makes, as well as reading and researching treestand reviews online, I finally decided to get the Big Game Titan Ladder Stand. I found this ladder stand on sale at Bass Pro Shops. It was 20 bucks off the original price, so that made my decision much easier!

Once I got the stand home, I unpacked it and laid out all the parts. I carefully read the instructions once before I even attempted to put the ladder stand together. Then I started assembling all the parts by following the instructions. It was really quite easy and from time I unpacked it until I had it assembled was about 45 minutes.

A few things I didn't like about the stand caught my eye right off. One was that beautiful black finish. Nothing in my neck of the woods is that black! So I took a couple cans of Krylon olive drab paint along with a can of dark brown and light tan and repainted the treestand with my own custom camo job. This included the seat with that lovely Big Game Titan Ladder Stand logo. It just stood out.

Another thing was that the flip up rest squeaked just a little. I had overtightened a bolt causing a pinch point. I quickly backed off the screw and everything was fine. I can't tell you how important it is to test your stand out at home before taking into the woods.

One final thing was that the sit rubbed against the frame whenever you lowered or raised it. It would make a 'tick' sound. Well, I couldn't have that so some camo duct tape over the friction points fixed this little problem.

Other than that, I have no beef with the stand.

Once I got it into the woods and sit in it for a while, I feel in love with it. It's far more comfortable that our tripod stands we have. I can do an all day perch without being uncomfortable. I can's tell you how nice that seat is. It consist of a foam padding with addition support beneath with bungie cords. Sine I'm a pretty big fella, I really didn't think this seat would be comfortable for me. I'm glad I was wrong as it turned out, it's probably the most comfortable seat of any treestand I've ever had!

Another things I like was how easy to install it was. Although the instructions say to use 3 people, I only had me, myself and I to put the Big Game Titan Ladder Stand into place, but it was a breeze and I had no problem!

Wood is timeless and always in style. Particularly hickory, black and Brazilian walnut, cherry, birth, cypress, maple, mahogany and bloodwood are all types that go well for any interior decoration project. Unfortunately hardwood is not the cheapest one to work with.

When you are working on modernizing and refinishing your staircases, you can do it at a cheaper cost without losing on the design. One way to go about it is using construction grade type materials that are more cost effective. Once you lay down the base, you can then cover this foundation with hard wood. This will reduce the amount of expensive wood that you are using, hence it will reduce your costs when implementing it. Also due to the fact that the top layer is hardwood, your stairs will look as beautiful as if they were done fully with the more expensive stuff.

You can find them in various sizes including 1", 1.5" and 2" ones, so you can customize the appearance and weight of your stairs just the way you want. Of course, the thicker they are, the more they will cost you. Also depending on the wood type you get, you will see different color shades that you can use to your advantage to match well with the rest of the room.

By having these at home you will eliminate the use of old carpeting that needs lots of cleaning and maintenance. Installing them is not very difficult but it needs a bit of know-how and a few tools to have around. If you're not sure whether you are up to the job, you can ask a professional woodworker or carpenter, who has done this countless times, to install them. While on the surface it looks like this costs you more, it will definitely save you time, and you can be sure in the knowledge that you get professional quality work done that will last you for many years ahead.

If you’re not sure whether you are up to the job, you can ask a professional woodworker or carpenter, who has done this countless times, to install them. While on the surface it looks like this costs you more, it will definitely save you time, and you can be sure in the knowledge that you get professional quality work done that will last you for many years ahead.
